Paul Lawrie OBE claims wire-to-wire victory at Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship in Trevose.

Paul Lawrie, OBE and 1999 Open Champion, claimed a fantastic victory at Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship. With an undeniably brilliant start and an ultimate wire-to-wire victory, his persistent play, even with difficult weather conditions, awarded Lawrie this year’s win.

Lawrie achieved an impressive record of two under par round of 70 to lift the title, comfortably ahead of fellow player Scot Euan McIntosh, who finished on eight under par. He established a one-shot lead after Friday’s first round and doubled his advantage to two strokes after Saturday’s second round.

The Aberdonian player recorded his last Legends Tour victory in 2019 at the Scottish Senior Open at Craigielaw Golf Club, and the 53 year-old was delighted to be rewarded this year's title after keeping very positive during the competition.

The Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship in Trevose launched in 2019, and has gained a reputation as one of the very best events on the Legends Tour, particularly due to its idyllic location. Surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Atlantic Ocean, the Championship is the ultimate test of golf while being the perfect event for spectators.

The weather on the first day was ideal, with warm and pleasant temperatures and not a cloud in sight. Saturday and Sunday, however, saw very different conditions, including strong winds coming in from the coast, followed by heavy rainfall, which challenged the players and their golfing abilities, especially the amateurs.

Demonstrating his impressive skills in what was an undeniably tough competition, Paul finished with a score of –11, closely followed by Euan Mcintosh, winner of the 2022 Riegler & Partner Legends tournament, with a score of –8 and Simon Brown, three-time winner of the European Senior Tour, with a score of –7.

Trevose was the perfect location to provide the impressive wire-to-wire spectacle, as viewers and competitors were following all three rounds of play. Speaking to Paul, he reflected on his triumph:
“It’s always nice to win – that's why we’re here, that’s why all the players are here,” Paul began.

“Even though we’re a little older, we’re still competitive and we still want to walk away with the trophy at the end of the competition.

“I played nicely all week – a little disappointed with the bogey at the finish, but apart from that, it was a solid week.”

The tournament produced even more memorable moments over the four-day event, with Champions (UK) plc, headed up by managing director Matthew Hayes, winning the Thursday Pro-Am tournament.

Included in the team were Alistair Brown (ABIRE), Matt Norton and their professional golfer, Steven Dodd.

The impressive event was once more organised by Champions (UK) plc, CEO and founder John Hayes, who commented: “It was an impressive win from Paul in the idyllic Trevose golf course.”

“We are very proud to be able to work on this event with the sponsorship of Farmfoods and to continue to bring golf legends together.”

With the European Senior Masters now reaching its conclusion, we look to the next large golf events on the calendar, including the upcoming Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship, which will take place at the prestigious Nailcote Hall between 9th – 12th August, and the Farmfoods European Senior Masters Championship at La Manga Club, Spain between 13 - 16 October 2022.
